FUNDING: RENEW and FAIR

Summary

March 12, 2024

The DOE Office of Science (SC) Biological and Environmental Research (BER) program announces its interest in applications for the Reaching a New Energy Sciences Workforce (RENEW) and Funding for Accelerated, Inclusive Research (FAIR) Funding Opportunity Announcements.

Reaching a New Energy Sciences Workforce (RENEW)

RENEW aims to build foundations for SC research through traineeships at academic institutions that have been historically underrepresented in the SC portfolio. RENEW leverages SC’s unique national laboratories, user facilities, and other research infrastructure to provide training opportunities for students and postdoctoral researchers from these institutions.

The hands-on experiences gained through RENEW will open new career avenues for trainees, forming a nucleus for a future pool of talented young scientists, engineers, and technicians with the critical skills and expertise needed for the full breadth of SC research activities.

Please see the funding opportunity for more details and requirements.

Funding for Accelerated, Inclusive Research (FAIR)

FAIR supports fundamental research to build research capacity at academic institutions that have been historically underrepresented in the SC portfolio, i.e., non-R1 minority-serving institutions (MSIs) and non-R1 emerging research institutions (ERIs).

This FOA aims to build research capacity, including infrastructure and expertise at these institutions, through mutually beneficial relationships between applicants and DOE national laboratories, SC scientific user facilities, or R1 MSI/ERIs. SC has compiled a list of institutions and their designations to support applicants.
