Office of Science Crosscutting Initiatives

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science (SC) supports fundamental research and enabling capabilities crucial for solving U.S. energy, environmental, and security challenges. From preparing for future biological threats to achieving net-zero carbon emissions, these challenges require the collective expertise of a diverse and multidisciplinary scientific community.

To marshal this expertise, the Office of Science has launched initiatives across its major science programs to accelerate the innovation process and advance goals in clean energy, climate, and biopreparedness. Many of these efforts will expand inclusion and training of research communities historically underrepresented in Office of Science activities while helping create a top-notch workforce to advance American competitiveness.

The Biological and Environmental Research Program (BER) supports research in five of these initiatives: FAIR, RENEW, BRaVE, Accelerate, and the SC Energy Earthshots.
