FAIR: Funding for Accelerated, Inclusive Research

Building research capacity, infrastructure, and expertise at minority-serving institutions (MSIs) and emerging research institutions (ERIs)

Website: science.osti.gov/Initiatives/FAIR

BER-supported FAIR projects, led by MSIs and ERIs, focus on diverse fundamental research topics in structural biology, environmental system science, and genomics for missions in energy and environment. FAIR researchers are examining the impacts of climate change on river deltas, piloting new tools to image protein motions at DOE X-ray light sources, and exploring ways to increase yields of energy-rich plant oils for alternative biofuel feedstocks.

Current Awards

In 2023, $37 million was awarded in funding for 52 projects to 44 institutions to build research capacity, infrastructure, and expertise at institutions historically underrepresented in DOE’s Office of Science portfolio. BER supported three projects, two are within the Biological Systems Science Division (BSSD) and one is within BER’s Earth and Environmental Systems Sciences Division (EESSD).
